Statistical analyses included calculation of receiver operating characteristic curves and area under the curve (AUC) values for detection of febrile subjects. Temperatures from 17 facial locations were extracted from thermal images and compared with oral thermometry. We have performed a clinical study of 596 subjects to assess the diagnostic effectiveness of standardized IRT-based fever screening and evaluate the effect of facial measurement location. A standardized method for IRT fever screening was recently published, but there is a lack of clinical data demonstrating its impact on IRT performance. Although IRTs have significant potential for human body temperature measurement, the literature indicates inconsistent diagnostic performance, possibly due to wide variations in implemented methodology. Infrared thermographs (IRTs) have been used for fever screening during infectious disease epidemics, including SARS, EVD and COVID-19. In the statistical analysis, a setting of 35.5☌ was found suitable for an IRTRS that is potentially workable.

The future development of a computerized data processing method is, however, preferable so that less manual work is involved. The procedures previously suggested allow for more systematic and scientific ways of detecting feverish persons suspected of SARS.
It is thus essential to give more attention on the device calibration before performing the data collection. However, the correlation between ear (contact) and eye (noncontact) temperatures taken by IRTRS was relatively lower than what was expected. The noncontact ear temperature was more closely related to contact measured aural (tympanic) reading after running, drinking a hot beverage, and normal conditions. Results showed that the TVS900 imager Type 2 has good capability in reproducing readings.
